# Waste recycling MRF software that ties every inbound load to the bale it ended up in

> Waste recycling MRF operations is the work a material recovery facility does: taking mixed recyclables in, sorting them and selling baled commodities out. The United States generated 292.4 million tons of municipal solid waste in 2018 and recycled just over 69 million tons of it, a 32.1 percent recycling and composting rate. Neurobird holds inbound loads, residue rates, bale inventory and commodity sales on one record, so tonnage in reconciles to tonnage out.

## What Neurobird Waste Recycling MRF Operations does

- Tie every inbound load to the hauler, the route and the audit that measured its contamination
- Track residue rate by hauler and by day so a contamination charge is evidenced rather than argued
- Hold bale inventory by commodity and grade, from production through to the sold ticket
- Reconcile tonnage in against tonnage out and residue, on demand rather than at month end

## How it works

1. **Weigh it in** Every inbound load carries hauler, route, material and net weight from the weighbridge, without retyping from a ticket.
2. **Audit the load** Sort audits record contamination by material against the load that was audited, so a residue rate belongs to a hauler rather than to a month.
3. **Bale it out** Bales are produced against commodities, held as inventory by grade, and closed out when the sale ticket lands.

## Industry context

- **292.4 million** Tons of municipal solid waste generated in the United States in 2018, up 23.7 million tons on the previous year. (source: US EPA, national overview facts and figures, https://www.epa.gov/facts-and-figures-about-materials-waste-and-recycling/national-overview-facts-and-figures-materials)
- **69 million** Tons recycled in 2018, with paper and paperboard accounting for roughly 67 percent of that total and metals about 13 percent. (source: US EPA, national overview facts and figures, https://www.epa.gov/facts-and-figures-about-materials-waste-and-recycling/national-overview-facts-and-figures-materials)
- **32.1%** Combined recycling and composting rate, from almost 94 million tons recycled and composted in 2018. (source: US EPA, national overview facts and figures, https://www.epa.gov/facts-and-figures-about-materials-waste-and-recycling/national-overview-facts-and-figures-materials)
- **146 million** Tons of municipal solid waste landfilled in 2018, half of everything generated, which is the gap a recovery facility is measured against. - **35.7 million** Tons of plastic products generated in 2018, 12.2 percent of generation and a rising share of what arrives on the sort line. ## Questions

### What is a material recovery facility?

It is a plant that receives mixed recyclable material, sorts it mechanically and by hand into commodity streams, and bales those streams for sale. What is left over after sorting is residue, and it goes to disposal. The facility is measured on how much it recovers and how clean the recovered material is.

### What counts as residue?

Everything that arrives but cannot be recovered and sold: contamination, non target material and material too degraded to market. Residue rate by hauler is the number that decides whether a contamination charge is fair.

### Does this replace our scale software?

No. It reads from it. The weighbridge produces weights. This attaches the audit, the residue and the bale to the load that weight belonged to, which is the part the scale never held.

### Can it produce the diversion number for a municipal contract?

Yes, and it can show the loads underneath it. A diversion figure that cannot be traced back to inbound tonnage is a figure nobody can defend at contract renewal.
